There are many different types of lies that we all encounter in our day-to-day lives.	살아가다 보면 별라별 종류의 거짓말을 만나게 된다.
The writers of the book "Spy The Lie," an excellent account of spotting deception, say there are three main categories of lies:	사기인지 아닌지 알아차리는 뛰어난 이야기인 “거짓말을 알아내다”의 저자에 따르면 거짓말은 주로 3가지로 분류될 수 있다고 한다.
1: The Lie of Commission.	1.적극적인 거짓말
This is the easiest one to categorize.	가장 쉽게 분류되는 거짓말이다.
A lie of commission is a blatant, bald-faced statement that is the exact opposite of the truth.	적극적인 거짓말은 너무도 훤한.
For instance, if someone at work steals your lunch, you see them do it, and they say "I did not steal your lunch," that's a lie of commission.	예를 들어 일터에서 누가 당신의 점심을 훔쳐가고 있는 걸 당신이 뻔히 보고 있는데도 ‘내가 당신의 점심을 훔치지 않았소” 라고 말하는 것이 적극적인 거짓말이다.

It's why you see so many celebrities endorsing products.	바로 이때문에 인기 유명인이 광고하는 제품이 그렇게 많은 것이다.
They bring a certain amount of influence with them, so you think "well if she drinks it, it must be good."	이들 인기 유명인이 그 제품에 어느 정도의 영향력을 주기 때문에 사람들은 “이것이 그녀가 마신 것이라면 분명히 좋을 거야”라고 생각하는 것이다.
Nope.	절대로 아니다.

They include white lies, dissembling, half-truths, exaggerations and fabrications.	하얀 거짓말, 딴청부리기, 반만 진실, 과장, 그리고 조작등이 그것들이다.
Now, knowing what we do about lies, and how they are told, it seems fair to ask the question…would people prefer honest ads, or do they want to be "lied" to?	이제, 우리가 거짓말에 대하여 어떻게 살펴 보았고 사람들이 어떻게 거짓말을 하는지 알아 보았으니.

Smokers returned to their older brands in droves, stating that they preferred the taste.	흡연자들은 이전의 브랜드 담배들을 향하여 그때의 담배 맛이 더 좋았다면서 떼지어 몰려갔다.
And after just four years, the company closed its doors.	그리고 단 4년만에 담배회사는 문을 닫았다.
However, taste had very little to do with the shuttering of the company's doors.	하지만 담배의 맛은 그 회사가 문을 닫은 것과는 거의 관련이 없었다.
It wasn't anything to do with the product itself, it was pretty much the same as any other.	제품 자체와는 아무런 관련이 없고 결국 이 제품도 다른 제품과 똑 같았던 것이다.
It was simply that smokers didn't like being reminded that they were killing themselves.	단지 흡연자들은 자신이 스스로를 죽이고 있다는 사실을 상기하기 싫었기 때문이다.
They preferred the lie that although cigarettes do kill many people, they wouldn't be affected because they are not susceptible to lung cancer.	그들은 비록 담배가 많은 사람들을 죽게 만들지만 그들은 폐암에는 걸리지 않을지도 모르기 때문에 차라리 거짓을 택한 것이다.
Blissful ignorance, coupled with hopeful thinking.	희망 가득한 바램과 기쁨 가득한 무지라고나 할까?
So, do people want honesty?	그래서 사람들은 진실을 원하는가??
Yes and no.	그렇기도 하고 아니기도 하다.
People actually want the illusion of honesty.	사람들은 실제로는 정직함의 환상을 원한다.
They want to think they are being told the truth, and do not want to be blatantly lied to.	그들은 누군가 그들에게 진실을 말해준다고 생각하기를 바라지 뻔뻔스럽게 거짓말을 한다고 믿고 싶어하지는 않는다.
Somewhere in the middle of that gray area is what is known as exaggeration, sarcasm, and playful language.	그 어딘가 회색지대 한가운데에는 과장, 비꼼 그리고 장난스러운 언어들이 존재한다.
Women will not chase after you if you spray a manly scent on you.	남성향 가득한 스프레이를 뿌려본들 여자들이 뒤를 쫓아오지 않는다.
But...they might just say hi at the bar.	아마 술집에서 하이 하고 인사 정도는 할까?!
You won't become a shiny-haired movie star by using shampoo...but you might get more people to notice you.	샴푸를 쓴들 반짝 반짝 빛나는 스타 배우가 되지는 않겠지만 좀 더 많은 사람들이 당신을 알아보게 할지도 모른다.
And so on.	사실 다 그런 것이다.
The whole truth is a hard pill for most people to swallow these days.	요즈음은 모두에게 완전한 진실이란 받아들이기 어려운 것이 되어버렸다.
And the likes of the VW bug campaign from the sixties is fast becoming an unlikely probability.	1960년대의 폴크스바겐 딱정벌레 캠페인 같은 것들은 앞으로는 다시 보기 어려워지고 있다.
