The company conducted a phase 3, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study to establish the effectiveness of darbepoetin alfa in reducing red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in patients with cancer who have anemia not due to the effects of concurrent chemotherapy. Nine hundred and eighty-nine anemic (hemoglobin [Hb] ≤ 11 g/dL) patients with active cancer not receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy were randomized to receive darbepoetin alfa once every 4 weeks (Q4W) or placebo.
