Se denomina genéricamente humanidades (del latín humanitas) a un conjunto de disciplinas relacionadas con la cultura humana.	Is generally denominated humanities, (from Latin humanitas), to a set of disciplines related to the human culture.
Existen otras denominaciones genéricas, como el concepto de «letras», que se utilizan habitualmente por oposición a las denominadas «ciencias» (debate de las dos culturas).	There are other generic denominations, as the concept of «letters», that are habitually used by opposition of denominated «science» (debate between the two cultures)
No obstante, existen otras denominaciones cuya identificación, asociación o diferenciación con la de «humanidades» es más problemática (según la intención de quien las utilice) y que conllevan distintas consideraciones epistemológicas y metodológicas: las de «ciencias sociales» y «ciencias humanas».	However, there are other denominations which identification, association or differentiation with «humanities» is more problematic (according to the intention of who are using them) and which entail different epistemological and methodological considerations: «social sciences» and «human sciences».
Se supone a las disciplinas humanísticas un mayor carácter ideográfico: el estudio de particularidades sin crear leyes o postulados generales.	It is assumed to the humanistic disciplines a greater ideographic character: the study of particularities without creating laws or general postulates.
En su origen (los studia humanitatis del humanismo renacentista), los saberes humanísticos o letras humanas se definían por oposición a las letras divinas.	In their origin (the studia humanitatis of the Renaissance humanism), the humanistic knowledge or human letters were defined by opposition to the divine letters.
Como elemento básico y definitorio de la civilización occidental y del sistema educativo tradicional (en este último también llegan a denominarse formación humanística), las humanidades están especialmente vinculadas a los denominados estudios clásicos: el arte y la cultura fundamentada en la Antigüedad grecorromana y que con diversas adiciones a lo largo de los siglos fue conformando el denominado canon occidental, lo que es acusado de distintos sesgos por los críticos de esta perspectiva (intelectualismo, machismo, eurocentrismo, obsolescencia) resumidos en la expresión peyorativa dead white males («varones blancos muertos»).	As basic element and definitory of the western civilization and the traditional educative system (in this last one also come to be called humanistic formation), humanities are especially linked to denominated basic studies: art and substantiated culture of Greco-roman antiquity and that with several additions over the centuries was shaping the called western canon, what it is accused of different bias by critics of this perspective (intellectualism, sexism, eurocentrism, obsolescence) resumed in the pejorative expression "dead white males" («varones blancos muertos»).
