Information Technology、特に「IT」という略語は、21世紀に入ってから多用されるようになった用語であり（たとえば、IEEEで「IT Society」と略されるのは、Information Theory（情報理論）の専門部会である）、インターネット、携帯電話、携帯情報端末などや、それらをインフラとした各種のサービスなどといった、情報、特にコンピュータ関連の技術をなんとなく漠然とそれっぽく指す用語として使われている。	Information Technology (IT) is a term with many usages after entering the 21st century. (eg., in the IEEE, IT Society is short for Information Theory Society). IT can be broadly referred to as information and its infrastructure of various services primarily computer-related technologies such as the Internet, mobile phones, digital devices and etc.
ITと呼ばれる技術応用は、大きく二つに分類できる。	IT applications can be classified into two broad categories.
従来手動で行われていた作業をコンピュータで効率化・発展させたものと、従来なかったサービスがコンピュータの応用によってはじめて可能になったものとである。	Conventional manual work, through computer applications, became efficient and refined; services that were not possible before became a possibility.
通信を含める場合はICT(Information and Communication Technology)と英語では言い、日本語では情報通信技術と言う。	In English, ICT (Information and Communication Technology) includes communications. In Japanese, it is referred to as Information Communication Technology.
漠然とした用語であるが、今日では、各種情報の収集・加工・通信や、その保管・共有などに不可欠な存在であるなどとされる。	IT is a broad term. Nowadays, the collection, processing, and communication of various information, as well as its storage and sharing are its essential features.
特に、ビジネス上の要請・課題をコンピュータの利用で達成することはITソリューション（あるいはICTソリューション）とも呼ばれる。	Particularly, meeting customer demands and facing business challenges through computer applications are also called IT Solutions (or ICT Solutions).
