本シリーズに共通しているゲームシステムを述べる。	This section will describe the various systems that exist within this game series.
特に本シリーズを代表する要素である、育成・対戦・通信といったものを中心に解説する。	Specifically, the elements that represents this series such as: training, combat, as well as connecting with other players.
最初のバージョンである『赤・緑』以来、現在まで共通する要素として、一部のスピンアウト作品を除き、ゲームの開始時にそれぞれ「みず」「ほのお」「くさ」のタイプ（世代によっては加えて他のタイプを併せ持つ）を持つ3匹のポケモンから1つを選択して始める。	These game elements have been there since the very first version of the game "Pokemon Red and Blue", excluding certain spin off titles. As well as being able to choose from 3 starting Pokemons with different types such as "Water", "Fire" and "Grass" (More types to come in the later installments of the franchise).
特に、この最初の3匹のポケモンは「御三家」ともいわれる。	Hence, the 3 Pokemons that you get to choose in the beginning were usually called the "big threes".
同一の世代に分類されるものは、ストーリー等は異なっていてもほぼ同一のゲームシステムであり、高い互換性を持つ。	The games that are under the same generation usually have the same system in its games, even if they have different stories, etc. They are also very interchangeable with each other.

第一世代と第二世代は、第一世代に登場するポケモンでかつ「ひでんマシン」技を除く第一世代の技のみを覚えている個体であれば双方向のポケモン移動が可能。	Between 1st Generation and 2nd Generation, as long as the 1st Generation Pokemon has only learned 1st Gen abilities (except "Hidden Machine (HM)"), it can engage in a 2-way Pokemon exchange.
第二世代と第三世代では一切のデータの互換性がなくなった。	This functionality is removed between the 2nd and 3rd Generation games.
第三世代以降は後世代への一方向のポケモン移動が可能である。	From 3rd Generation onward, the Pokemons could be transferred one way to future generations.
データの互換性が低くなる理由は、世代が更新されるたびに新たなポケモン・わざ・アイテムなどが追加される為である。	The reason for this change was because new Pokemons, abilities and items get added with each release of a new Generation.
逆に言えば、世代が更新されない限り新ポケモンや新アイテムが追加されることはない。	To put it another way, new Pokemons and items cannot be added unless they are added along with a new Generation.
なお、一部例外はあり、例えば、「はっきんだま」は第四世代の途中（『プラチナ』）で新たに追加されたアイテムである。	There are exceptions to this rule however, and one example being an item called "Griseous Orb" was added in the middle of the 4th Generation (Platinum). "Griseous Orb" is the name of the item in the English localization, its original Japanese name read 'Hakkin Dama' in which 'hakkin' means 'Platinum', the name of the generation.
そのため、このアイテムには「通信交換できない」等の特殊な制約がある。	Because of that, this specific item has a restriction that makes it unable to be traded online between players.
同一世代であっても後で発売されたソフトで追加された道具・技・フォルムは先に発売されたソフトには転送できない場合がある。	An item, ability or Pokemon forms that were added later in an update, even in the same generation, there is a possibility that it will not be transferable to an earlier software release.
なお、フォルムチェンジ等に関しては、多くの作品では古い側からは通常のフォルムで表示される。	When it comes to form switches, many Pokemon games will prioritize displaying a Pokemon's older form instead of its new one.
