Redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions include all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation state changed by either gaining electrons (reduction) or losing electrons (oxidation).	К окислительно-восстановительным реакциям (ОВР) относятся все химические реакции, в которых степень окисления атомов меняется путём присоединения электронов (восстановление) или их отдачи (окисление).
Substances that have the ability to oxidize other substances are said to be oxidative and are known as oxidizing agents, oxidants or oxidizers.	О веществах, которые обладают способностью окислять другие вещества, говорят, что они имеют окислительные свойства, и называют их окислителями, окисляющими агентами или оксидантами.
An oxidant removes electrons from another substance.	Окислитель отнимает электроны у другого вещества.
Similarly, substances that have the ability to reduce other substances are said to be reductive and are known as reducing agents, reductants, or reducers.	Аналогичным образом о веществах, которые обладают способностью восстанавливать другие вещества, говорят, что они имеют восстановительные свойства, и называют их восстановителями или восстанавливающими агентами.
A reductant transfers electrons to another substance, and is thus oxidized itself.	Восстановитель отдаёт электроны другому веществу и, таким образом, сам окисляется.
And because it "donates" electrons it is also called an electron donor.	И поскольку он "жертвует" электроны, его также называют донором электронов.
Oxidation and reduction properly refer to a change in oxidation number—the actual transfer of electrons may never occur.	Строго говоря, окисление и восстановление означают только изменение степени окисления, поскольку передачи электронов как таковой может вообще не происходить.
