Pour désigner les recherches qui précèdent l’invention des premiers films de cinéma, et qui n'utilisent pas le film souple de celluloïd, on parle de précinéma.	يطلق مصطلح ما قبل السينما للتعريف بالمحاولات و الأبحاث التي سبقت تصوير أول الأفلام السينمائية، و التي لم يستعمل فيها شريط الفيلم الفوتوغرافي المصنوع من السيليلوز (شريط 35 مليمتر).
Et la date de 1888 peut être retenue comme séparation entre le précinéma et le cinéma, l'invention du film souple en celluloïd par John Carbutt et sa commercialisation par l'industriel George Eastman en 1888 sous la forme de rouleaux de 70 mm de large étant la condition sine qua non pour amorcer un spectacle qui allait devenir une industrie culturelle.	تعد سنة 1988 سنة فاصلة بين فترة ما قبل السينما و ميلاد السينما. اختراع الفيلم الفوتوغرافي من قبل جورج كاربوت و تسويقه من طرف رجل الاعمال جورج استمان سنة 1988 على شكل لفافات بعرض 70 مليمتر، كان السبب الرئيسي لخروج هذا النوع من العروض الى الوجود و الذي سيصبح صناعة ثقافية فيما بعد.

Certains historiens du cinéma, comme l'Américain Charles Musser, n'ont pas la même définition du précinéma, et classent Edison et Reynaud dans cette catégorie, au motif que le mode de visionnement d'Edison n'était pas la projection, et que la pellicule de Reynaud n'était pas la pellicule 35 mm que nous connaissons encore aujourd'hui.	بعض مؤرخي السينما، كالأمريكي تشارلز موسر، لا يتقاسمون نفس الرأي حول تعريف "ما قبل السينما"، و يصنفون إديسون و رينو في هذه القائمة، و يعود ذلك لعدم استعمال إديسون لتقنية المسلاط لعرض الأفلام، و شريط رينو لم يكن شريط 35 ميلمتر الذي نعرفه اليوم.

Golding describes the savages' behavior as animal like; the savages dropped their spears (man's tool) and "screamed, struck, bit, tore.
