恣意性	Arbitrariness
ソシュールは、「能記」(signifiant)と「所記」（signifié）という2つの概念（シニフィアンとシニフィエ）を用いて、言語記号の音声・形態とその意味との間には必然的な関係性はないという言語記号の恣意性を説いた。	Saussure explained his idea of the arbitrariness of notations ("l'arbitraire du signe") using the concepts of “signifier” (significant) and “signified” (signifié) to indicate that the sound or form of a notation (word) and it’s meaning do not of necessity bear any relation.
これとはほぼ反対の立場として音象徴（sound symbolism）という見解がある。	Standing opposed to this is the concept of sound symbolism.
これは、音素そのものに何らかの意味や感覚、印象といったものがあり、言語記号はその組み合わせによって合理的に作られているとするものである。	This states that there is some connection between the phoneme and the meaning, feeling or impression engendered by the notation (word); that the meaning and the (phonetic) structure are logically related.
しかし、実際にはどの言語にも普遍的な音象徴というものは存在しないため、現在そのような立場の言語研究はあまり行われていない。	However, practically speaking there is no universal “sound symbolism” present in any language, so currently there is no significant research being conducted from this standpoint.

美術は多く宗教とともに発達してきたが、近代以降は宗教から独立した一分野を形づくるようになり、個性の表現としても捉えられるようになってきている。	Much of art developed alongside of religion, but in modern times it has become a field of it's own, separate from religion, and perceived as an expression of individualism.
美術は芸術の一分野である。	The fine arts are an independent branch of artistic expression.
芸術とは、表現者あるいは表現物と、鑑賞者とが相互に作用し合うことなどで、精神的・感覚的な変動を得ようとする活動である。	The purpose of the arts is to effect a change in the emotions or perceptions of observers as they interact with the artist or the artistic object.
とりわけ表現者側の活動として捉えられる側面が強く、その場合、表現者が鑑賞者に働きかけるためにとった手段、媒体、対象などの作品やその過程を芸術と呼ぶ。	The important aspect is our perception of the artist's work. Thus, "art " is the process by which the artist seeks to influence the observer , and the means, the medium and the objective as embodied in the object produced.
表現者が鑑賞者に伝えようとする内容は、信念、思想、感覚、感情など様々である。	The artist is attempting to communicate various things- beliefs, ideas, feelings, emotions etc.- to the observer.

日本語においては、英語の「computer」のカタカナ語として「コンピュータ」または「コンピューター」を用いる。	To render the English word "computer" into Japanese, katakana is used: both "konpyu-ta" (コンピュータ)and "konpyu-ta-" 　(コンピューター) are acceptable.
法用語では「電子計算機でんしけいさんき」という表現が刑法や著作権法等で用いられている。	The legal term used in the penal code and the copyright act is "denshi keisanki" (電子計算機)- "electronic calculator".
また、手動の機械式計算機などと違う点を強調して「自動」の語が初期には入ることもあったが、近年はほぼ見なくなった。	In earlier times, the prefix "jidou" (自動)- "automatic"- was added to differentiate computers from manually operated mechanical calculators, but that prefix is rarely used now.
「電子計算組織」という語もあり、官公庁の公式文書である入札公告、条例などで21世紀に入った後の使用例も見られる。	When inviting bids or writing ordinances, the term "denshi jidou soushiki" (電子計算組織)- "electronic calculation system"- has been used by government offices since the beginning of the 21st century.
「組織」の用法は大体「システム」といった意味のようである。	The term "soushiki" (組織) is usually translated as "system".
電算機という語もあり、「電算業務」といった形で電算と略しても使われているが、情報処理学会が歴史について調査した際に、学会誌『情報処理』に掲載された富士通における歴史を述べた記事によれば、電子計算機以前の頃、リレーによる計算機によりサービスを開始した同社が（「電子」じゃないけど、ということで）使い始めた言葉であろう、と書かれている。	There is also the word "densanki" (電算機)- "electric calculating machine", and "densan gyoumu" (電算業務)- "electric calculation operations"; often abbreviated to just "densan". Quoting an earlier article concerning the history of the Fujitsu Corporation, an article published in the journal of the Data Processing Academy- "Jouhou Shouri" (情報処理), "Data Processing"- says that before the introduction of computers, a computing machine using relays was called an "electronic" calculator by Fujitsu, "even though it was not electronic". This appears to be the first usage of the term "denshi keisanki".
他に、人工頭脳や電子頭脳、台湾や香港などでもよく使われる電脳といった言葉がある。	In Hong Kong and Taiwan, the terms "jinkou zunou" (人工頭脳)- "man-made brain" and "denshi zunou" (電子頭脳)- "electronic brain" are also in use.
